Broadband Powerline (BPL) is a communication technology enabling broadband Internet communications to be distributed using the existing electricity distribution grid. It can be used either externally, on utility lines, or within a building.

Its main advantage is that of “no new wires” - there is no need to build a new infrastructure – - broadband can be provided anywhere where suitable electricity cables are present.

BPL is especially attractive in  economies with limited telephony penetration.

By using VoIP (voice over IP) telephony, subscribers can be provided with voice and data services in one “hit”

BPL also combines well with other broadband technologies such as Wi-Fi.

Powerline Technology's products are based on the 200Mbit/s chip technology from DS2. This sophisticated 3rd generation technology has been designed to be extremely resilient to the noisy powerline environment, and to provide maximum deployment flexibility.

To be effective BPL products need to be configured properly and optimised for the network on which they are deployed. Powerline Technologies can advise on all aspects of BPL deployment including network characterisation and measurement, network design and system management.
